I think the moles are kind of a cross between naked mole rats (not moles, but pretty surreal looking and share a similar lifestyle) and mousers. As in, those things the scientist from Ninja Turtles made to hunt Splinter. In the video games they would grab your hand and you'd have to shake them off... anyway...

These are kind of like the lesser monsters in the story. The small fry, I guess. The... the mousers XD
